Cesar Azpilicueta & Chelsea
Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first Premier League goal of the season for Chelsea last weekend.
Azpilicueta was miles offside as he headed Chelsea level at Cardiff on Sunday.
Jamie Carragher went to great lengths to defend the linesman for failing to spot the offside call.
Cardiff were then sucker-punched by a Ruben Loftus-Cheek winner.
Azpilicueta, 29, is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2022.
Chelsea’s captain has played in all 31 matches for the Blues this season.
Azpilicueta’s Chelsea back-up identified
The Evening Standard’s Simon Johnson has reported that Reece James could be given a shot in the Chelsea first-team next year.
A 19-year-old defender, James is being viewed as Azpilicueta’s understudy. Readers are told:
James has made 40 appearances in all competitions this term (with Wigan) with his form seeing him voted in the EFL Championship team of the season.
James is in contention to be promoted to the first team at Stamford Bridge anyway and used as the back-up to captain Cesar Azpilicueta.
Chelsea’s transfer ban is also relevant in the discussion.
Currently blocked from signing any players for the next two windows, Chelsea are likely to have to turn to their massive youth project to revamp their squad.
Four players to leave Chelsea
Even though Chelsea are handcuffed from signing new players, some of the current first team squad may still leave west London in the summer.
Italian defender Davide Zappacosta, who joined for 23 million pounds, hasn’t cut it at Chelsea. A move back to Serie A beckons.
Three other fringe players set for exits are Gary Cahill, Danny Drinkwater and Rob Green.
